Introducing The Historical Augusta Coverlet

This beautiful coverlet was commissioned by the Friends of the Augusta Library and created by We Love Country. It is 100% cotton, two-layer jacquard woven in the U.S.A., preshrunk, colorfast and machine washable. It is handsome and practical, measuring approximately 48 x 68 inches, and fringed on all four sides.

The following sites are pictured on the coverlet:
  • Springfield Baptist Church. Springfield Baptist Church was established in 1787, and is the oldest independent African-American congregation in the U.S. with an unbroken record of existence.
  • The Appleby Branch Library. Built in 1830 as a private residence, and purchased in 1928 as the home of Scott B. and Annie Appleby, this house was donated to the City and County in 1954 as a branch of the Augusta Public Library.
  • The Cotton Exchange. Constructed in 1886, this building served as the Augusta Cotton Exchange, which at its peak, was second in size only to Memphis, TN in trade volume.
  • Boyhood Home of Woodrow Wilson. From 1860-1870, this Telfair Street site served as the boyhood home of Woodrow Wilson, who later served as the 27th President of the United States.
  • Old Medical College of Georgia. Completed in 1835, this Telfair Street building served as the first medical school in Georgia. It operated as the site of the school until 1911, when the college was moved to Harper Street.
  • Ezekiel Harris House. Built in the 1790s at 1822 Broad Street, this was the home of tobacco merchant, Ezekiel Harris.
  • Sacred Heart Cultural Center. Sacred Heart Church was build in the late 1800s, and served as a house of worship for 70 years. After enduring 16 years of vacancy, the facility reopened in 1987 as a cultural center.
  • Paine College's Lambuth Chapel. Paine College was founded in 1882, and is the only historically black institution in America that was jointly founded by the United Methodist Church and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
  • St. Paul's Episcopal Church. This 1918 building is the church's fourth structure on the site. The church was founded in 1850 as part of the original Fort Augusta complex.
  • Augusta State University's Benet House. This site was once the home of the Augusta Arsenal commandant. It was erected in 1827, and bears the name of poet Stephen Vincent Benet, whose father served as commandant during the early 1900s.
  • Old Richmond Academy Building. Until 1926, this was the site of the Academy of Richmond County, the oldest chartered school in the South. From 1929-1960, the building was occupied by the Augusta Library.
