 GEORGIA DOWNLOAD DESTINATION IS HERE!

What? Georgia Destination Download is a service for library patrons to download and check out audiobooks on their home computers. Since the audiobook will expire on the patron’s home computer after 3 days, the audiobook must be copied to an MP3 player before the expiration date. Some books can be burned to CD. The audiobooks that have been transferred to an MP3 player or burned to a CD will never expire.

A home computer, connected to the Internet. Download of audiobooks will not be allowed from inside the library, you must download from a non-library computer.  Note that download time may be long on a computer without broadband Internet service, as audiobook files tend to be large.

Windows operating system (2000 or newer). Mac and iPod owners will be able to use this by late summer according to Overdrive, the audiobook vendor.

Window Media Player (version 9 or newer)

Overdrive Media Console software (you will need to install this when you begin using the program).  Go to http://gadd.lib.overdrive.com. From that page, you will find helpful information on how to download & install the Overdrive Media Console software, and how to use the program.

Optional: a portable audio device (MP3 player), or a CD burner/player*

*See more information about supported portable audio devices and the use of CD burner/players below.

  • Audiobook Lending Policy

Check out limit: 3 titles at a time on your home computer

Lending Period: 3 days per title (the audiobook is disabled on the computer after 3 days) Note that the file will not automatically be deleted from your computer, it will simply have listening disabled. You'll need to manually delete the file.

The lending period is short to encourage you to transfer the audiobook to an MP3 player, or to burn it to CD (not all audiobooks may be burned to CD; the publisher of the audiobook makes this decision). After the audiobook is transferred to MP3 player or CD, you can listen to it as long as you like; it does not expire.

Maximum Cart Items = checkout limit plus 2 items at a time waiting for the decision to check them out (total cart limit 5)

Cart Expiration = 30 minutes

Waiting List Pickup Period = 3 days

Waiting List Limit = 5 titles per patron

Overdue fines: NONE!

  • Portable Audio Devices (MP3 players) and CD burners/players

Please find information about compatible devices HERE.  Regarding burning audiobooks to CD:  Some publishers allow this for library patrons; some do not.  The library has no control over this decision.

Important things to know about choosing and using an MP3 player:

  • You will want a feature that holds the place (resumes where left off) when the MP3 player is turned off

  • You may want a player that supports bookmarking. Many MP3 players do not support this option. These types of devices may be somewhat more expensive to purchase, but this is a very nice feature. It allows you to put a "bookmark" where you stopped listening to the audiobook, enjoy other media (music, video, etc.) on your device, then resume listening at your "bookmarked" spot.  This is different from the above option that simply resumes playing where the device stopped when it was turned off. You can find out if an MP3 player supports bookmarking or has the "resume" feature by clicking on “more information” below the device listed on the page listing compatible devices.

We hope you will enjoy your Georgia Download Destination listening experience. Please tell us if you do, or if you don't. We want to know! If you have problems getting it to work, please contact support with a detailed description of your problem or question.
