A Quick Look at Burke County, Georgia

Burke County was created in 1777 as one of the original eight counties in Georgia. It was first called the Parish of St. George, but was renamed to honor Edmund Burke, a member of the British Parliament who supported the interests of the American colonies. Waynesboro, the county seat, was named for the famous Revolutionary War hero “mad Anthony” Wayne.

With 832 square miles, Burke County is one of the largest counties in the eastern United States. Its fertile farmland produces cotton, corn, soybeans, wheat and peanuts. The population of Burke County in 2003 was 22,949. Burke County is known as the “Bird Dog Capital of the World.”
