SAVING YOUR WORK ON PUBLIC COMPUTERS

All instructions require “left clicking” on the mouse.

 

Saving a Document to Floppy Disk . (Note: the use of flash drives is preferred.)

1.     Insert floppy disk. Click on FILE, then click SAVE AS

2.     Name  the fle and save it to My Documents.

3.     Moving the file to your 3 ½” floppy.

·         On the DESKTOP, Double CLICK on the 3 ½” A: floppy drive. Also double-click on the My Documents folder. Make sure you can see at least part of the A: floppy drive window while viewing the My Documents window.

·         Click and drag the document from My Documents to the A: floppy disk drive window.  

Saving a document to Flash Drive

1.     Connect your removable media (flash drive).

2.     Click on FILE, then click SAVE AS.  

3.     Click on the down arrow that appears beside My Documents in the Save As window. Look UP in the list (above My Documents) and locate Desktop.

4.     Click on Desktop, and locate the shortcut to your removable media (flash drive G or H).

5.     Click on the shortcut, name or rename the document as necessary, and click Save.

Opening your 3 ½” floppy disk or flash drive.

1.     Insert disk in disk drive or connect flash drive to USB port.

2.     On the DESKTOP, double-click on the 3 ½ A: drive, or on the Shortcut to Removable drive G (or H) icon.

3.     Then double-click on the document NAME to open it. You can continue to SAVE to your floppy disk or flash drive by clicking on FILE and then SAVE as you work.

If you save a file to My Documents before saving it to a floppy disk or flash drive, be aware:  

·         Documents are public on the library computers. It may be viewed by anyone using a public PC.

·         Documents are automatically deleted by the next day. If a library staff member deems it necessary, it may be deleted the same day. It is also possible that another patron may delete a file the same day.

Deleting a file from MY DOCUMENTS 

1.     To DELETE your document from MY DOCUMENTS, double click on the Desktop ICON, MY DOCUMENTS.

2.     Locate your document and click once on the ICON to highlight it.

3.     FIND a list of functions on the left side of your screen. Click on DELETE.

4.     Click on YES when you are prompted to confirm the deletion. (If you do not delete your document, it WILL be deleted automatically in 24-48 hours, but it will be viewable by others until that time.)

 

SAVING PHOTOS OR TEXT FROM A WEB PAGE TO REMOVABLE MEDIA

 

1. COPYING the photo or text.

  • HIGHLIGHT (click and drag the mouse to select) text or photo(s) from a web page.  COPY the text/photo.  (Press Control-C to copy, or click Edit | Copy.)
  • If you’re having trouble selecting just the text or photo, you can click EDIT | SELECT ALL, and then PASTE the entire page into Word (step 2) and in Word, delete all but what you want to save.

2. PASTING the photo or text.  

  • OPEN Microsoft Word. (If you can’t see the Word icon on the desktop for Word, MINIMIZE the Internet Explorer window.)
  • In a new document, press Control-V or click Edit | Paste to PASTE in the text/photo into the Word document.
  • Alternately, you can open PAINT and paste a photo into a new document. You can save the photo as a jpg, bmp, gif, or other image file format.

3. SAVING the document.

  • SAVE the file to your removable media (thumb/flash drive, or floppy disk). See reverse page for further details on how to do this.

4. DELETING the document from MY DOCUMENTS.  

  • If you saved the file to the My Documents folder, DELETE it before you leave.  This is a public folder and may be viewed by other library patrons. Files not deleted manually will be automatically deleted overnight.

 

A NOTE ABOUT USING REMOVABLE MEDIA

If you use a flash/thumb drive (“removable media”) to save your work, please correctly release the drive from the computer before physically removing it. Left click once on the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the System Tray (bottom right). When you see a notification that it is safe to remove hardware, THEN physically remove the USB drive from the computer.  If you do not take this step, you may do damage to your device or files.
