U3 Flash drives may not work properly on public computers

Due to security concerns, public computers do not allow standard use of USB flash drives supporting U3 (encryption) technology. An error message will occur telling you the device will not function properly.

We recognize that Library users must be able to save their data to take with them when they leave the Library. There are a few workarounds that you might try if you encounter this problem with your U3-enabled flash drive.

  • Try to access your files from the "Shortcut to Removable drive H", found in the desktop shortcuts on the public computers.  U3 drives automatically create two "drives" when connected to a PC. On the library computers, Drive "G" will be the segmented portion of the U3 flash drive containing the U3 software.  This will NOT function on library computers. Drive "H" will be the segmented portion of the flash drive that contains files & documents.
  • IF YOU HAVE PASSWORD-PROTECTED YOUR U3 DRIVE, the data portion of the flash drive (on our library public computers, drive "H") will not open.  Password authentication requires that the U3 software on your drive be running and that you correctly enter the password before the data on the drive can be accessed. If you want to use your U3 flash drive on a public library computer, you must disable password protection in the U3 program on the drive. (Note: You must disable the password protection before you come to the library to use the drive, as you will not be able to access the U3 program in order to disable password protection on a public computer.)

A final note: If you haven't invested in a flash drive yet, and you plan on using one on a public computer - either at the library, or possibly at other public computer locations - we strongly recommend that you either purchase a flash drive that does NOT have U3 technology - or learn how to manage it so that your flash drive can be used as a regular storage drive. View this U3 technology support page for more information on this procedure, or this U3 Newbie Guide for helpful information.
